Have you wondered why our fathers of old didn't experience some of the illnesses we are experiencing today?
Before the advance of technology, food preparation were based on crude ingredients. Natural sweetners, aromers/ flavonoids and spices were used in meal preparation and this helped them alot in living a healthy life.
But in this modern time, technology has made feeding to be " easily difficult" for all. It is easy because we all can grab a sachet of this spice or that flavonoids and continue with our cooking. It is however difficult because we use more of this packaged stuffs which contains lots of chemicals and some of these chemicals are causing health issues due to excessive usage. We have neglected the old habit of " everything natural".
Africa is really a blessed continent with lots of vegetation at our disposal, but sadly, we don't know what most of the grasses, leaves, seeds and nuts all around us are used for, of which the Ehuru seed is inclusive.
The Ehuru seed also known as African nutmeg, Calabash nutmeg or Jamaican nutmeg is a seed gotten from a perennial plant called Ehuru tree. It is common among the Igbo and Yoruba tribe and is used because of its aroma in food. It contains calcium, Iron, potassium, vitamin c, folic acid and anti oxidants
- Meal preparation: Just as the nutmeg adds great aroma to meals, so does the Ehuru seed to meals. Asides adding it to soup like Banga soup or African salad ( abacha), it can be used in making delicious jollof rice and stew. All you need to do is to blend it together with your tomatoes and other spices like ginger and garlic, fry and cook your stew and jollof rice. Sit back and enjoy the aroma and taste it has to offer. It can also be added to other dishes of your choice.
- Often times, when women give birth, Ehuru seed is added as a spice to their yam pepper soup. This seed however helps in the quick flow of breast milk for the infant's feeding. Other benefits includes
- Helps in weight loss
- Kidney infection treatment
- Relieves constipation
- Insect repellent etc.
You can get this Ehuru seed in the local market.
Go ahead and grind it, store in an airtight bottle and add flavor to your cooking.
Remember to live a healthy life by eating healthy.
