African breadfruit

Africa is really blessed with lots of plants to classify as food, of which the African breadfruit is included.

African breadfruit is very popular in Igbo land popularly known as ukwa . Ukwa is usually prepared in different ways and eaten as a main dish. It is a perennial plant. 
The African breadfruit is rich in vitamins and minerals which includes vitamin b1, b2,b3, b5,b9, potassium, calcium among others. It contains carbohydrate, protein and fat.
Benefits
Some of its benefits among others includes:
  • It contains enough calories which is good for the day's activities.
  • It is energy giving.
  • African breadfruit contains free radicals which helps to reduce aging marks and other age - related diseases.
  • It prevents heartburn, ulcer and other digestion related illnesses.
  • It contains antioxidants which helps in fighting against some disease in the body.
  • It will surprise you to know that African breadfruit stimulates hair growth and it's appearance while reducing dandruff and itching of the scalp.                                                                Recipe for making mashed breadfruit : there are so many ways of making the African breadfruit but this method is for mashed breadfruit. This recipe is very easy and needs just little ingredient.
  • 4 cups of well cooked ukwa seeds 
  • 1tbsp dry pepper or 3 medium sized fresh pepper
  • 4-6 tbsp of red oil
  • Salt to taste.   
  • Potash ( optional)   
  • Warm Water                                              Note : you can attain that the breadfruit is done when there is an opening on the various seeds to showcase the white part of the seed( i.e you will notice 2 colours, white and brown)
Procedure
Mash the breadfruit properly with a mortar or any equipment of your choice, add the oil, pepper and salt to your desired taste. Gradually add water till the right texture is achieved. Serve  hot.

The African breadfruit can also be roasted and eaten as a snack.
If you are tired of eating the same type of meal all the time, try something different (ukwa)
